Achieving Structural Integration

In this program yoga practices have been organized according to the biomechanics of movement of the spine. Each week will be devoted to a particular direction of spinal movement: Forward Bending, Back Bending, Twisting, Lateral Bending, Extension and Balance Postures. We will explore the benefits of the main poses within each category and learn how to organize them to get maximum effect from your practice.

WE WLL EXPLORE

  • Main poses within the category and reasons for doing them;
  • The effect the poses have on physical, mental and physiological function;
  • Safe execution technique;
  • Ways to relieve muscular tension, aches and pains;
  • The use of the breath to deepen the effect of the practice.

PROGRAM CONTENT

Week 1: Movement principles, role of breath, connection between breath and movement, staying present.
Week 2: Forward bending, strengthening and protecting lower back.
Week 3: Back bending, reversing "computer posture".
Week 4: Twisting, realigning the structure, improving digestion.
Week 5: Lateral bending, restoring balance to body's asymmetries.
Week 6: Lengthening the spine, improving posture, carrying ourselves with grace.
Week 7: Finding balance outwardly and inwardly, improving concentration.
Week 8: Getting comfortable in the seating posture, overcoming resistance.
Week 9: Putting it all together: designing personal practice.
Week 10: Practice review. Introduction to pranayama.

PRACTICE EMPHASIS: Asana (physical postures)
At the end of the program you will learn how to design your own practice for the specific needs of your body and have a private session with your teacher to discuss and practice it.
