Educational Yoga Programs

According to the yoga tradition, there are five distinctive levels to the human system. Here is how those 5 levels (or 5 bodies) are described in a yoga classic called The Taittiriya Upanishad:

"Human being consist of a material body build from the food they eat. Those who care for this body are nourished by the universe itself"

"Inside there is another body made of life energy. It fills the physical body and takes it's shape. Those who treat this vital force as divine experience excellent health and longevity because this energy is the source of physical life"

"Within the vital force is yet another body, this one made of thought energy. Those who understand and control the mental body are no longer afflicted by fear."

"Deeper still lies another body comprised of intellect. Those who establish their awareness here free themselves from unhealthy thoughts and actions, and develop self-control necessary to achieve their goals."

"Hidden inside is yet a subtler body, composed of pure joy. It is experienced as happiness, delight and bliss."

In the 10 Week Programs we explore each one of those bodies and learn the yogic tools that can help you live fully and gracefully at every level of your being.

Achieving Structural Integration

Your skeleton gives your body structural stability. In it's design, it is exactly what a competent scaffold rigger would build. Anything else, and the whole thing would tip over and fall to the ground. Unlike the scaffold, in addition to maintaining structure, the body must also move smoothly in different directions, enabling us to walk, run, crawl, lean and leap.

The "S" curve of the spine is the centerpiece of our structural design. The arms, ribcage, pelvis and legs are suspended from the spine, forming 4 pairs of load-bearing joints: shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. Getting the body into an upright position and keeping it there against gravity is not an easy task. When the body maintains it's symmetry and proper relationship between various parts, everything functions perfectly. But even if one joint gets pulled out of it's proper position, it will affect the integrity of musculoskeletal system as a whole.

In this program we will explore your body's support structure. Each week will be devoted to a specific area: Lower back, Upper back, Neck, Shoulders, Elbows and Wrists, Hips, Knees, Ankles and Feet. You will learn how to achieve optimal functioning at each joint and work toward restoring symmetry and structural integrity of your body.

  • Main poses that increase stabilty and improve mobility at each joint;
  • Safe execution technique;
  • Ways to relieve muscular tension, aches and pains;
  • The use of the breath to deepen the effect of the practice.

Structural Integration

At the end of the program you will learn how to design your own practice for the specific needs of your body.

ENERGY AND VITALITY: Exploring Human Energy System

According to the yoga tradition from the moment of birth it is prana (life force) that organizes, activates, and animates our physical bodies. Prana governs our physiology and moves in 5 distinctive currents. When the flow of prana is restricted or impeded the whole system becomes imbalanced and prone to disease.

The key to health and well-being is to keep our 5 energetic currents in harmony. When one current becomes imbalanced, the others tend to become imbalanced as well because they are all linked together. This imbalance reflects in malfunctioning of various physiological processes - circulation, digestion, elimination, immunity and growth. We can learn to work with our energy through breath and movement and aid in restoring balance to the flow of Prana, ultimately improving the general quality of our lives.

  • Change your energy level (perk up or unwind);
  • Improve the quality of your sleep and morning energy;
  • Strengthen the immune system;
  • Aid with digestion and elimination;
  • Attain better emotional control and equilibrium.

In this program the focus shifts from gross to more subtle levels of our system. Using the combination of breathing techniques and movement we will explore the deepest layers of our system and learn how to activate and harmonize them.

PRACTICE EMPHASIS: Asana (physical postures) and Pranayama (breath work).

COST: $160

In the everyday life our attention is often scattered. We are easily distracted, sometimes disoriented and frequently unfocused. Compulsive mind activity might lead to stress, anxiety, depression and overall feeling of being lost and disconnected. By training the mind to focus we can access our own wisdom and vitality. It's a way to take charge of the direction and quality of our lives, our attitudes to work, family, the world around us and, ultimately, our relationship with ourselves.

We will focus on mastering the field of attention, gaining control over the activity of the mind and try to become aware of our perceptions and responses to the reality.

PRACTICE EMPHASIS: Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breath work) and Meditation.

THE CHAKRA MODEL: Harmonizing Body's Energy Centers

Chakras are the centers of awareness, that are neither physical nor anatomical, yet vital and active. They influence cells, organs, entire hormone system, effect one's thoughts and feelings and represent certain emotional characteristics and qualities. Defects in chakras have a local effect on organ function as well as detrimental influence on specific character traits.

You will learn the underlying principles of chakra work and how they can be applied within the context of contemporary culture in your everyday life. Awareness of your energy centers will help you become more stable, vital, empowered, loving, expressive, discriminative, and awakened.

YOGA SUTRA STUDY: Living Consciously

The Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali constitute an authoritative teaching on yoga as a discipline of mind, body and spirit. It is highly valued by all branches of yoga. Patanjali consolidated the entirety of yoga philosophy into 196 lucid aphorisms. They provide deep, universal insight into the essential psychological and metaphysical questions we pose. They describe the process of unbinding our limited ideas about ourselves and give us the tools for self-liberation.

  • True meaning of yoga and what happens if we achive the yogic state;
  • How the mind works and it's limitations;
  • What prevents us from leading happy fulfilled lives;
  • What practical steps we can take to feel better on a day-to-day basis.

In the course of the 10 weeks we will systematically work our way through the Yoga Sutra-s. Each class will include presentation on a number of key sutras (typically 2-6 per session), sutra discussion, physical practice, possibly a short meditative practice and sutra chanting. We will use this classical yogic text as a road map to develop and maintain a life process grounded in spirituality.

PRACTICE EMPHASIS: Text Study, Asana, Pranayama, Chanting, Meditation

COST: $160.

In this 10 week program you will explore the second chapter of the yoga sutras in depth, paying specific attention to real, contemporary application of the ancient wisdom. You will also learn how to integrate the teachings into your everyday life in a meaningful way.
